Alveston Defibrillators – Keeping Our Community Safe
A community project since 2014

Picture
Alveston has had publicly accessible defibrillators since 2014, when local residents came together to raise money to provide AEDs for the village. Since then, a dedicated team of four local volunteers has regularly checked and maintained the equipment, helping ensure the defibrillators remain available and ready to use 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and we want everyone in Alveston to know where the defibrillators are and how to access them if they are ever needed.

When the latest fundraising appeal began in 2026, it was a surprise to discover how many local people were unaware defibrillators were already available in the village. Having an AED nearby can make a vital difference in a cardiac emergency, but only if people know where to find it and how to access it.
Where are Alveston's defibrillators?
There are currently publicly accessible AEDs which are both available for use by the community in an emergency at:
Jubilee Hall
Greenhill, Alveston
Thornbury Cricket Club
The Ship Field, Thornbury Road, Alveston

How do I get a defibrillator in an emergency?
If someone is in cardiac arrest, call 999 immediately. The 999 operators will identify the nearest available defibrillator and give you the access code for the cabinet. Go to the AED location, enter the code and retrieve the defibrillator. You do not need to be medically trained to use an AED. The 999 operators can talk you through what to do and the defibrillator provides clear spoken instructions. The most important thing is to call 999 first and follow their instructions.

Keeping the AEDs ready 24/7
Alveston is fortunate to have a dedicated team of four local volunteers who regularly check and maintain the defibrillators. They check the equipment, cabinets, batteries and pads to help ensure everything remains in working order and available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The volunteers give their time to maintain this important community service, while ongoing funding is needed for replacement batteries, pads, equipment and new installations.

Improving AED coverage
The Alveston Defibrillator Fund is continuing to work towards improving AED coverage across Alveston and the surrounding community. The original project began with two AEDs in 2014. Thanks to the continued support of residents, businesses and organisations, the Fund is now working to provide additional publicly accessible AEDs in areas which are not currently well covered.

A community effort
Providing and maintaining AEDs is a community effort. The equipment is only useful if people know it is there, know how to access it and are confident enough to use it. Please take a moment to remember where Alveston's defibrillators are. You may never need one yourself, but knowing where to find one could help save someone else's life.

Remember
CALL 999 → GET THE AED → START CPR → FOLLOW THE AED INSTRUCTIONS
You don't need to be trained. In an emergency, don't be afraid to use it.
If you would like to support the work of the Alveston Defibrillator Fund, donations are welcome:

New Councillors Needed

The Alveston Rudgeway & Earthcott Parish Council has (at election) 11 seats available. This had been calculated by the District Council (South Gloucestershire Council) as the number of Councillors required to effectively allow your Parish Council to fulfil its statutory duties and to enable it to operate efficiently on your behalf.
If you are unaware a Parish Council is the lowest tier of government with councillors appointed via seats at local elections every four years. If these seats have not been filled a parish council may co-opt additional councillors to fill those vacant seats.
Look around the Parish and you will become aware of the things your council has recently done for the community. The Jubilee and Lime Kiln open space belongs to the council and as such maintains it, encourages sporting activity, recently adding an outdoor gym and pump track. It encourages children’s play by recently upgrading the Down Rd playpark and resurfacing the Lime Kiln play park.
ITS NOT EASY nor a WALK IN THE PARK. – Your Parish Council has raised over £125,000 in grants to ensure these high-quality facilities do not come from the parish precept (resident contribution within the council tax bill).
The Parish Council will continue to commit to ensuring the cemetery, allotments, play areas, sports facilities, open spaces, highway land (although currently not applicable in many areas) will remain of the highest quality. To the best of our ability we’ll retain a litter free park, a safe place to play, a peaceful and well-ordered cemetery where we organise residents’ internments. We’ll encourage well-appointed allotments to be fully occupied and aid local community groups with grants.
Our councillors will sit on committees to aid the Jubilee Hall, Youth Centre, Local Charity & Community Organisations, Oldbury Site, Tytherington Quarry, Allotment Association. As well as sitting on planning committee and attending a parish council meeting each month to ensure your council is operating efficiently and legally.
The council is operated by one part time clerk, one part time cemetery caretaker and only seven (devoted and dedicated) volunteer councillors.
ITS SIMPLY NOT ENOUGH
If the council is unable to run because it is not quorate at meetings it will not be able to conduct business on your behalf.

This is to set out a new strategy and policies to guide and manage growth and change in our area over at least the next 15 years. The Regulation 19 consultation of South Gloucestershire Council’s Local Plan required a public consultation in which Alveston Parish Council took part. The remit from SGC was to consider: -
  1. How to shape the places that we live, work and socialise.
  2. Consider the direct impact on quality of life, the natural and built environment.
  3. How to achieve positive impacts on climate change, inequalities and encourage a green economy
  4. To discuss choices and make decisions about where future homes and jobs might be located, and which areas should be protected
Alveston Parish Council formed a sub-committee of two councillors, SGC Ward Councillors, and a resident to provide a considered response to SGC. The minutes and responses are set out in the attachments below.

Alveston Nature Area

ReNature ReConnect volunteers have been working to develop a nature garden at the corner of the Down Rd greenspace. A day by day summary of their progress is detailed within the file below or posted on the ReNature ReConnect Instagram page. Thank you for all their good work to date.

We are looking forward to what spring will bring to the nature area. There has been some further work to the pond aa few extras s the dry summer last year had resulted in it being empty and as a result dogs entered who's claws ripped the lining. This was replaced and the wet winter has allowed it to fill and with a surrounding picket fence it shoud remain devoid from dogs allowing nature to take its course.
There have been 2* carved tree trunks added and with a few extras to be added this year the area will continue to improve.

Land off Vatingstoke Lane - Public Consultation

In response to the Council’s Plan, Waddeton Park has submitted an outline planning application (and is currently open for consultation with SGC). On hundred and thirty homes, including  affordable homes on Land off Vattingstone Lane is being considered. The site is located to the north west of Alveston and is bound by the B4461 Vattingstone Lane to the north and east. It is accessed off Vattingstone Lane and is opposite Marlwood School.

The developer states that the proposals greatly increase the areas of public open space available to the existing community and follow extensive engagement with SGC and consultation with Design West’s independent Design Review Panel to identify an appropriate design with a landscape and heritage led approach for the site.

The community can view the proposals and leave their feedback via the website www.vattingstonelanealveston.com.

At a Planning Committee Meeting on the 16th February (after revised plans had been submitted by the developer), the committee resolved to work with Olveston Parish Council to issue a joint statement to be issued to South Gloucestershire Council. The details of which will be published here after approval by councillors.

Construction Works

Upcoming works on the A38, scheduled to start this Spring and be complete by Spring 2027. Works will take place during this period between M5 Junction 16 to Grovesend Road junction, Thornbury. Additionally, during this period, the Alveston Hill cycleway will be constructed.
What to expect
Works at Alveston junction are due to start week commencing 31 March and Church Road junction week commencing 7 April. At Alveston junction it will not be possible to enter into the B4061 but exiting will be possible. Access will be available from Thornbury via Alveston Hill road. Additionally at Church Road junction there will be no entry into Church Road (B4427) from Thornbury until late Summer 2025, but entry will be maintained from the Almondsbury direction.
Also, as part of these junction works, there will be construction on the on-highway section of the Alveston Hill cycleway scheme, which will provide an active travel connection into Thornbury.
A map displaying the construction phases will be available on the South Glos Council website or you can request a printed copy. Please be aware that journeys will take longer than usual during construction.

Bleed Kit Installed

The Rapid Relief Team (RRT) Bristol has made a welcome contribution to our community by donating  a bleed kit at The Premier Store in Alveston (amongst others locally). These vital additions to communities have the potential to save lives. In recent weeks, the RRT has generously donated 10 bleed kits to other nearby locations including Green lane Garage in Olveston, Thornbury Youth Pod and Almondsbury Social Club.

These bleed kits are versatile and can be used in a variety of situations, including road traffic collisions, agricultural incidents, trauma-related injuries at work or home, and knife-related incidents. In critical bleeding situations, time is of the essence, and having these kits readily accessible and visible can make a life-saving difference. Inspired by community spirit and the value of giving, the RRT, made up of volunteers from the Plymouth Brethren Christian Church, puts compassion into action by offering practical support to charities, emergency services, and other organisations in their time of need. The installation of this equipment is supported by our local police team and local store owner at Down Rd. Thank you to all those involved.

For more information on the locations of registered bleed kits in the Avon & Somerset area, visit HeartSafe's Bleed Kit Map at https://heartsafe.org.uk/bleed-kit-map. For more information on RRT's work, please visit www.rrtglobal.org/uk.

This has been a major job and a huge initiative for the community. The Parish Council had secured all materials/aggregate  for the build free of charge from Heidelberg Materials (Tytherington Quarry) with additional funding through s106 payments from South Glos Council. (This is money made available to the Parish Council from taxation on local housing projects which can only be used for specific purposed within a designated radius of the build).

The Parish Council is delighted to announce that the Pump Track opened with a ribbon cutting ceremony performed by Tytherington Quarry Manager James Brown. Also present was Councillor Mathew Riddle representing South Gloucestershirte council and Chair of Alveston Parish Council, Cllr John Graham

The cutting was followed by a demonstration by experienced BMX riders and lady boarders from the local league. A Hot Air Balloon was tethering thanks to Prestige Grounds, the Parish Councils' regular grounds maintenance contractor. Adding a social element to the event,; soft drinks / burgers / and bar was provided by Alveston Community Events who raised money for their event at the Jubilee Field on Saturday 7th September. The seating area for parents to socialise whilst the riders were enjoying the track was provided by the Jubilee Hall and thank you to the Youth Centre for opening their toilets for the occasion.

The track is open for all to enjoy, whether you are BMX, boarder or scooter rider the pump track can accomodate all and for all ages. (Although we recommend very young beginners are accompanied).

Do you wish to take your riding a lttle more seriously? If any adult wishes to take the initiative to form an Alveston league team, whether it be boarding, or BMX get in touch with the council clerk who can guide you in the right direction.

New Councillors Wanted

We are still looking to recruit new councillors and as last years election was uncontested we now have six councillors and our allocation is eleven. We therefore encourage you to consider joining this small group of local people who help to make the Parish a better place to live. This is a very good time to become involved in developing our community as there are many challenges and new and exciting opportunities for the year ahead.

Parish Councillors must be over 21, a British National or a Citizen of the Commonwealth or EU and fulfil a local residency requirement. You are not a paid employee of the Council as the law forbids it and you don’t have to have a political affiliation.

If you are interested and want to find out more, contact any Parish Councillor or the Clerk at the Parish Office (contact us).

Dogs & Play Areas

Residents please note that the Parish Play areas at the Lime Kiln (opposite St Helen's School) and the Cross Hands play area located at the end of the Down Rd green space do not allow dogs within these areas (whether they are on the lead or not). Thank you for your cooperation.

Poo-Shaming - Pick up your dog waste

Unfortunately residents have noticed an increase of dog fouling on our streets and have urged the Parish Council to bring this to the attention of dog walkers. Where as a vast majority pick up their dogs' waste and deposits in the dog waste / litter Bins which are provided around the parish by your Parish Council there is a smameful minority who do not dispose of dog waste appropriately and leave it to be stood on or at worst to be a hazard which could induce illness.

It has been noted that a minority use the Jubilee and Lime Kiln Field to walk their dogs and residents must be aware that a bye-law which was a condition of donating the land to residents insists that fields must not be used as a facility for dog walking and is strictly for sport, recreation and childrens' play. When councillors request that dogs be taken off the fields the stock answer is that there is nowhere for dogs to exercise. The Down Greenspace CAN be used to allow dogs to exercise

Land owners / farming community have recently advised us that  they dare not put sheep out in the fields due to massive quantities of dog mess. Farmers have received abuse from a number of people when challenged about their dogs running around, people not picking up or leaving the bags in the hedges. Police and council dog wardens have been informed!

This is well known to be a national problem but if everyone plays their part and acts responsibility in our Parish we can ensure that this remains a pleasant place to live.

Alveston Transformed at Night

The Parish Council is delighted to announce that South Glos. Council have completed the update to the street lighting within the Parish replacing the old for new LED streetlights. The purpose of this is to improve the night lighting at the same time reducing maintenance and most importantly CO2 emissions. The lights are fitted with automated dimming to control usage at peak and off-peak times, as between 11PM and 6AM the lighting output is reduced by half. The benefits of the new lights are to; reduce maintenance, greater control and flexibility of light emissions, reduced “sky-glow”, a reduction by 70% in energy consumption and co2 emissions and a better more direct light source.

Resurfaced Play Area with new Play Frame

Picture

Picture
The Parish Council is proud to announce that this play area has now been re-surfaced and along with the completed installation of a new play frame and repainting of all equipment by a kind community volunteer the area feels new and up together.

The Parish Council forward their thanks to all involved.

Alveston Police Matters

Picture
The general message is to ask residents to be vigilant and to raise awareness of anything suspicious through the local Police and Neighbourhood Watch.
Police will always attend upon request from residents to give crime prevention advice.
Police have been advised that people are sometimes too worried to phone 101 or report online for fear others will find out. Residents can be assured that everything is treated with absolute confidentiality and do not disclose the caller information Police will most likely speak with the caller first to get more information before taking any action. If however you are still not confident you can always report to police as ‘anonymous’ and not give your details. Crimestoppers is another option, online or phone 0800 555 111 this too can be anonymous.
Visit the Severn Vale team page to find out who's fighting crime in our area, along with their calendar of events, current policing priorities, and tweets.

Potholes & Resurfacing

Picture
At a recent Parish Council meeting our district Councillor Matthew Riddle informed the Parish Council that South Gloucestershire Council are undertaking works to repair potholes within the Parish.
Several have now been identified however, if you are aware of dangerous potholes in your street / road these can reported to your Clerk who will pass your information onto South Glos. Council

The Parish Council is delighted to announce that resurfacing works have been completed at Rosewood Avenue and Old Gloucester Road.

Tree Planting

Picture
At the Parish Council meeting in January Councillors agreed to support the Community Forum with additional tree planting at available space on Parish Council land.
The Parish council has set aside £500 for the planting of new saplings scheduled for later in the year.
Councillors have requested that we all look to trying to take action on climate change by tree planting in our gardens and if any landowners within the Parish have space for the Council to plant trees then please contact the Parish Clerk.

Greenhill Parade Telephone Box

Picture
The Parish Council is delighted to announce that it has secured the Telephone Box situated at Greenhill Road from BT for community use.
The Parish Council has now handed the maintenance and use of the box to the Alveston Community Forum who have now transformed this to a book exchange.

St Helen's Speed Reduction Measures

Picture
Members of the Alveston Parish Council Working Group observed the arrival of school children at St Helen's School and the surrounding traffic movements on 20th and 22nd of November from 8am onwards. (Homeward bound observations are due), a summary of observations and comments from the working group were discussed and reported at the Parish Council meeting on the 16th December.
School Governors have also set up a school working party; (students, governors and staff), to draw up a new “Green” Travel Plan.
Further information will be published on alveston.org as it arises.

Parking Issues

Picture
Alveston Parish Council recognise residents’ concerns relating to both the issues of parking at Quarry Road and those of parking at St Helens School at pick up and drop off times, along with speeding traffic coming off the A38 through Greenhill Road.
In conjunction with South Gloucestershire Council councillor representatives it was decided that two separate working groups be set up to investigate the issues and work toward solutions to these problems which are a cause of concern to residents.

SGC Protocol for unauthorised traveller sites

Picture
With the advent of further traveller incursions onto the Down Road green space the Parish Council remind residents that this land belongs to South Gloucestershire Council who have recently updated their procedures and protocol.

Timber Trail

Picture
Picture
Installed in 2018 our Timber Trail is located at the far end of the Lime Kiln Field under the trees (perfect for a hot sunny day).  The Timber Trail is a professionally designed and manufactured wooden trim trail for a variety of ages of children between 3 - 10 years old, (although ideally for the very young (3 – 5 years) we recommend that supervised play on the Clatterbridge, Weaving Beam and Balance Beams).

Over the coming years the Parish Council will be looking to upgrade other equipment however, if residents have ideas for further investment in play / exercise equipment for our recreation areas please pass any comments to the Parish Clerk via email: [email protected].

New Structure for Your Parish Council

Picture
Due to a lack of councillors it was decided that the Parish Council sub-committees be disbanded and be replaced with a “Responsible” Councillor to oversee issues within their areas and to head discussion groups which will report their findings to the Parish Council Meeting on the third Monday of every month in the Jubilee Hall. The Planning Committee will continue to meet at 7PM on the 1st and 3rd Monday of each month as usual.

Dog Fouling and Vandalism

The Parish Council is disappointed to report that they have received several complaints relating to both dog fouling and vandalism.
It is obvious that neither individual Councillors nor the Parish Clerk have resources available to rectify this problem but would please ask residents to be responsible and proactive in maintaining Alveston‘s wellbeing.
Dog fouling and Graffiti can be reported to South Gloucestershire Council on the “report it” section of their website or alternatively inform the Parish Clerk and he will do this for you!

Courtesy to Disabled Pedestrians

It has come to light recently that residents’ cars and delivery vans have been parking entirely on the pavement causing an enormous inconvenience to wheel chair users, blind pedestrians and other disabled residents as they are required to divert their route onto the road and in some cases (for wheel chair users, where a drop kerb does not exist) a lengthy detour is required.

Could residents please show courtesy, respect and some common sense and ensure that free access to our pavements is available to all.
